What societal problem does your project solve?
Thirty-four percent of all clients served by the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma are children under the age of 18. Kids in poverty depend on special programs just so they can eat through the weekend when there not in school. Oklahoma is in a fragile position ranking 5th out of 50 states nationally in a category of food insecurity and hunger. Forty percent of the people served by the Regional Food Bank in Oklahoma are the working poor – a family of 3 with an average household income of $11,440 with($4,000 below the poverty level). What would be the measurable outcomes of the partnership that you propose to create between the community and your educational institution?
By extending the amount of food and the length of time that the food bank can distribute food to individuals and families in the area. We plan to minimize the frequency of food collections necessary to provide consistency in sustainable programming between the university and the community partner. How would you, with the support of your faculty advisor on campus and some one from the community, work together around this specified community issue?
We plan to work closely with our regional food bank, local businesses, and college volunteer organizations to eradicate hunger. We would create collaborative networks including, but not limited to, community leaders, school administrators, faculty, staff and students. We plan to work together to coordinate this initiative by bringing the information of community partners’ needs to the university to utilize its knowledge base as a resource, while working with campus groups to assist in food collection. How would you envision sharing power and decision making in the partnership? In other words, instead of doing something for the community how would you do something with the community?
By allowing each partner to use their strength and where they are most powerful to make an impact to the program. If our main mission and goal is to create awareness in our state, we will have no problem sharing power and decision making to achieve our common ideals. We will work with the Central Oklahoma Community Action Agency as they determine the needs of the families they serve. Our collection of food will serve some of the needs of their client families, but they will need to determine the entire needs of the people they serve. How would you collect data on what the project was doing and use it in the decision making process?
By doing a weekly assessment on the amount of canned foods being collected and amount collected at each location. We can make changes to our whole infrastructure to better improve our project as needed. Also we created a pre and posttest to see what the people in attendance knew about hunger issues prior to sharing some of the less know and startling facts about hunger needs in our area. What would be the project activities? Give examples of how the strengths already existing in the community will be acknowledged, built upon, and enhanced in the partnership to solve the problem.
There is already a community canned food initiative but the students at Oklahoma are still unaware of the issues surrounding hunger in our state. We give them the opportunity to make a difference while learning of the economic impact that hunger has on our state. What obstacles or challenges might you encounter in implementing your project, and how would you address them?
Other organizations doing a canned food project similar to ours.I would pay close attention to how they run their program and who their target audience is.
Establishing relationships with other organizations to make the impact and results better by turning an obstacle into an opportunity.
Recruiting Volunteers:
Would you recruit additional student volunteers? If so, how?
Also if needed create joint collaborations with other students organizations to create more awareness and impact.
Enlisting Partners:
Do you envision enlisting businesses, or other organizations, etc., to help; if so, how?
How would the award money be used here?
If your project idea is an innovation of an existing
program, what are its current funding sources?
The current funding is the savings account of the organizations involved.
What do you anticipate learning from engaging in the service project?
How to effectively communicate an idea or a dream to others. To make them see what you see. How the direct impact of hunger affects the ability for a child to learn. If the above questions have not enabled you to convey the essence and value of your project’s impact, use this space to supplement your answers.
Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs states that the basic human needs must be satisfied first before achieving anything else in life, and one of the most important physiological needs is food. My vision of the American dream is to not only make America better, but all of humanity. We must be aware of the significant potential of college students’ hunger for change, so that social improvement can take place tomorrow. Please submit an abstract (clear summary) of your proposed project idea.
The purpose of this project is to spread awareness throughout our community, of the hunger issues that exist in our state and country. I want to present this in a way that would make a the greatest impact and a lasting impression to the audience. By raising this awareness, and access to the project, I hope to gain the support and talents of others to build the program. Presently multiple partnerships in talent, sponsorship and volunteerism have raised awareness and participation in the program. The canned food weight increased from 1400 lbs. to 2200 lbs. last year with the goal this year of 3000 lbs. Poverty reduction will be realized though successful food distribution programs such as Hunger No More.
