Student and Community

Section 2

(not more than one paragraph for your response)

What societal problem does your project solve?

Clean and available drinking water which is not readily available.

What would be the measurable outcomes of the partnership that you propose to create between the community and your educational institution?

The project involves protecting the Bavadi’s i.e open traditional water resources like water spring , in order to provide safe drinking water to the villagers of Morini. With the help of students and faculty we will work in the community in the village of Morni (Bhoj jabial) which lies on the mountainside, at 1220 meter above sea level. Being situated to Himalayan boundary fault zone it is prone to earthquakes. There are indigenous Khuls and Bavadis existing in the block of Morni, which are not functional due to many reason like breakage of water pathways, etc. In the Morni block with the plundering of forest, the traditional water resources in rural areas have dried, causing misery to their dependent population.

In addition to the above, there will be more Khuls and Bavadis and less disease.
During summer there is acute shortage of drinking water in Morni block especially in Koti and Kothi Panchyat and people have to depend upon streams etc. which often causes epidemic direahea and other water borne diseases. Therefore there is a need to

We will work with the community to:
1. Rejuvenate Bavadis in order to provide safe drinking water to the villagers.
2. Construct walls along the Bavadis and sheds over water sources along with the construction of animal ponds and washing platforms.
3. Plant trees and fast growing grasses like the Napier grass around the water source which will make the project very much innovative and integrative.
The following indicators will be used for measuring the success of project.
• Prevention of slit in to the bavadis (spring water).
• Community participation in terms of labor or cash.
• Follow up committee formed for maintenance of water source.
• Supply of safe drinking water to community.
• Reduction in incidences related to water borne diseases like direahea etc.

How  would you, with the support of your faculty advisor on campus and some one from the community, work together around this specified community issue?

We have to work together to create awareness and make possible the opportunity for villagers to have drinking water.

Section 3

(not more than one paragraph for your response)

How would you envision sharing power and decision making in the partnership? In other words, instead of doing something for the community how would you do something with the community?

SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Threats) analysis of the community and its resources. On the basis of SWOT analysis a strategy will be planned to enhance the strength of community like participation of community in developmental programs and use of RTI act by the community to know their rights and schemes of govt. for the remote area of Kothi panchayat. After constructing Bavadis the following strengths will be built upon and enhanced:
1. Training for Cash Crops.
2. Latest technologies and methods for Irrigation like Drip Irrigation.
3. Promotion of Organic Cultivation.

How would you collect data on what the project was doing and use it in the decision making process?

Participatory Rural Appraisal and Focus Group Discussion to identify Bavadis

Section 4

(not more than one paragraph for your response)

What would be the project activities?  Give examples of how the strengths already existing in the community will be acknowledged, built upon, and enhanced in the partnership to solve the problem.

The NGO Society for Technology & Rural Development based at Kurukshetra is working in the proposed area and has done door-to-door survey to identify the Bavadis which needs to be protected for providing safe drinking water.
We during our last semester visited this place and interviewed people belonging to different sections who were residing in the village for identifying the Bavadis which require construction and maintenance.
The strengths already exist in the community will be acknowledged with the help of SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Threats) analysis of the community and its resources.
3. Promotion of Organic Cultivation

Section 5

(not more than one paragraph for your response)

What obstacles or challenges might you encounter in implementing your project, and how would you address them?

The following challenges may be faced during the implementation as are under.
• The project area is very remote and transportation facilities are not available in the area. The supply of raw material like sand, cement and stone to the project site is very difficult task and during in rainy season it becomes all the more difficult to reach at project site.
Solution proposed.
Maximum community participation will be ensured in term of voluntary work to solve this problem. Mule may be used for carrying the raw material to the project site.

Section 6

(not more than one paragraph for your response)

Recruiting Volunteers:
Would you recruit additional student volunteers? If so, how?

Beyond the community and the NGO the following partners from (PU and other)will be engaged for necessary action.

1. Education Department
2. Forest Department.
3. Irrigation Department.
4. Health Department.

Enlisting Partners:
Do you envision enlisting businesses, or other organizations, etc., to help; if so, how?

Yes. Word of mouth.

Section 7

(not more than one paragraph for your response)

How would the award money be used here?
If your project idea is an innovation of an existing program, what are its current funding sources?

This project is yet to be initiated, currently there are no resources available for the programme and the estimated cost for one Bavadi is Rs 40 000/- (appx). We will motivate the villagers to contribute for half of the cost of the construction. We will use CASE funds to help start the project.

Section 8

(not more than one paragraph for your response)

What do you anticipate learning from engaging in the service project?

We intend to learn from this project :

• Practice of Social work method (Community organization) in the field
• Community needs assessment.
• PRA techniques.
• Project formulation and implementation.
• Participatory evaluation and monitoring.
Developmental schemes for rural development

Section 9

(not more than one paragraph for your response)

If the above questions have not enabled you to convey the essence and value of your project’s impact, use this space to supplement your answers.

 Plantation of trees around the Bavadis will ensure that the roots of trees in the area hold the water naturally and thereby enhancing the productivity potential of the land
 Growing of grass like the Napier grass around the water source will help in the provision of green fodder for the cattle stock of the region which will subsequently boost their milk yield.
 Protection of Bavadi will ensure availability of sufficient water which will subsequently help in the cultivation of off seasonal vegetable and cash crops. Such a step will give an economic boost to the beneficiaries of the region.

Section 10

(not more than one paragraph for your response)

Please submit an abstract (clear summary) of your proposed project idea.

“Conserving the Traditional Water Resources: A Lifeline for the Remote Villages of Morini Hills”

To conserve and preserve the Bavadis in the remote area of Morni Hills for providing the safe drinking water. Besides providing safe drinking water they will be benefited by getting water for their crops which will automatically boost their family income is expected from this project. As a result of all this their living standards will also go up. In addition to the above benefits the project will help in saving the time and energy of the women who use to travel so many miles to fetch safe drinking water. After the successful completion of the project we intend to replicate the same can be replicated to the nearby areas.
