What societal problem does your project solve?
The project involves providing “Basic Early Childhood Education” to the children below 5 years of age, belonging to low-socio-economic families, coming to the crèches at villages Dhanas and Dadu Majra which are run by Durga Das Foundation. The purpose of providing basic education to infants / preschool children is to enhance their developmental abilities and self regulatory behaviour. Emphasis will be laid on Activity Based Learning (ABL), wherein the child needs to act, interact and thereby construct his own backpack of learning. The child by interacting with the world around will build his/her intellectual capacities, emotional and social persona as well as personality. As for learning to happen the child can’t merely listen, receive, repeat and copy what is said or read. Currently, children in these crèches stay from 9.00 am to 2.00 pm under the supervision of a local lady attendant, who simply teaches them basic rhymes.Under the project, to begin with the children will be divided into two groups depending upon their age i.e. until 3 years and 3 to 5 years. We would like to implement the innovative “Basic Early Childhood Education” programme for these kids covering the following activities on daily basis:
1. Prayer
2. Basic Manners and Etiquettes
3. Rhymes- Action Programme
4. Developmental Skills (Motor Skills, Use of Language & Social Skills, Sensory & Thinking Skills)
5. Story Telling
6. Confidence Boosting (Increasing Self Esteem, and Initiative)
7. Self Regulatory Behavior (Attention, Motivation, Curiosity ), Exploration, Persistence)
During the activities the main focus will be on “children being made ready for school rather than the school being made ready for the children”.
What would be the measurable outcomes of the partnership that you propose to create between the community and your educational institution?
The tenure of the project will be of one year.1. We would measure the results by comparing the documentaries to be prepared :
a) At the time of adoption and after six months depicting their performance on the above mentioned activities.
b) For children attending our innovative Basic Early Childhood programme in the crèches with those not attending the said programme.
2. We will be making a pre-test and post-test analysis with the help of a questionnaire
1. Buying white boards, markers etc
2. Drawing books, colors and sketch pens etc.
3. Refreshments for the students.
4. Indoor sports material.
5. IQ boosting games.
6.
This will help college students relate to the young kids
How would you, with the support of your faculty advisor on campus and some one from the community, work together around this specified community issue?
By engaging in the current service project we will enhance our learning of how to practice: Core values of social work i.e.
• The worth and uniqueness of every person
• The entitlement to justice
• The claim to freedom
• The essentiality of the community
Methods of Social Work i.e.
• Case Work
• Group Work
• Social Action
Faculty will work with students and community.
How would you envision sharing power and decision making in the partnership? In other words, instead of doing something for the community how would you do something with the community?
Both parties will come together to decide how to go forward. Students will talk with the children to see what is important to them so that a connection could be made at their level. How would you collect data on what the project was doing and use it in the decision making process?
Interview and taking notes. What would be the project activities? Give examples of how the strengths already existing in the community will be acknowledged, built upon, and enhanced in the partnership to solve the problem.
The strengths already existing in the community has been and will be acknowledged, built upon, and enhanced in the following ways:A) The place where the crèche is located has been allotted by the local village Panchayat to the foundation.
B) The lady care taker is from the same village, therefore her services will be utilized for motivating the left out below poverty line families to send their children to the crèches.
C) Once in month we will invite the local health worker for the proper health check-up of the children
D) In collaboration with Durga Das Foundation, we will gradually replicate this innovative project –
(i) in the Anganwadis already existing in the same community
(ii) in the neighbouring villages,
(iii) extending further to cover all the remaining villages falling under the Chandigarh Administration.
What obstacles or challenges might you encounter in implementing your project, and how would you address them?
Challenges:1. Taking the child to the crèche and retaining him / her for the day is very challenging in itself.
2. Making their parents realize that their child is learning something good which will be of immense significance for him /her in the near future.
Addressing the challenges:
1. (a) By making the learning process children – friendly so that the children love to come to the crèche.
(b) By providing them something unique to eat for their special lunch once in a week.
2. By motivating the parents, especially the mothers, that while your child will be kept safe in the crèche, you can work somewhere and earn to make themselves self-reliant.
Recruiting Volunteers:
Would you recruit additional student volunteers? If so, how?
Enlisting Partners:
Do you envision enlisting businesses, or other organizations, etc., to help; if so, how?
2.Health Authorities of U.T, Chandigarh, for health and hygiene awareness both for the care providers and the children.
3.Tourism Department of U.T, for outdoor recreational activities.
4.Sports Department of U.T Administration for providing material of indoor games.
5. Parents and Care Givers - How to improve their interaction with the children.
How would the award money be used here?
If your project idea is an innovation of an existing
program, what are its current funding sources?
What do you anticipate learning from engaging in the service project?
Getting more students aware of this project.Learn about a holistic approach to development from classroom to real life.
Bring children to mainstream schools and learn how to apply what we learn in class.
If the above questions have not enabled you to convey the essence and value of your project’s impact, use this space to supplement your answers.
We will lay emphasis on providing a holistic view of development and learning across transition points which shows how the mental, social and emotional development of children in general interacts with their learning. We will put in our efforts to get the children of the crèches admitted to the mainstream schools. From this small initiative we want to cover more crèches like this. Please submit an abstract (clear summary) of your proposed project idea.
The project entitled “Bachpan: The Foundation of An Individual’s Personality” will be undertaken in the villages of Dhanas and Dadu Majra. In these two villages crèches for children from the BPL families are being run under the aegis of Durga Das Foundation.Around fifty children stay in these crèches under the guidance of a lady supervisor. Under the project emphasis will be laid on providing basic education to infants / preschool children for enhancing their developmental abilities and self-regulatory behaviour through innovative education programme. The main focus will be on making the children ready for school. As it has been noticed that, there is a continuing uneven transition from the early childhood practices to the primary school which affects the development and the educational output of children in general and exacerbation transactional difficulties for the B.P.L (Below Poverty Line) children in particular.
The project has been introduced with the support of village Panchayat, opinion. leaders and other influential community members. In addition to the community members, support from other concerned departments of U.T Administration like Education, Sports and Health will be solicited. Grant provided by CASE will be utilized for procuring the material required to improve the quality of basic education being provided to the BPL children.
To ensure sustainability of the project emphasis will be laid on:
(i) Identifying the young educated residents of community, for sparing their time to educate the children for developing their skills.
(ii) Motivating those who are already sponsoring the special lunch, for providing the financial assistance to procure the material required for improving the quality of basic education improving the quality of basic education of these children
