At Panjab University, India, the School of Education has made a dramatic improvement in adult literacy by working with community leaders and volunteers.

With the help of local community leaders, PU students surveyed a community near the university to find and document adults in each household who could not read. Faculty, students and community leaders formed a review committee to supervise teaching by PU students and community residents that they trained.  As a result of this program, 100% of participants could read and understand road signs, newspapers and basic written messages relating to work and living – all at a minimum rate of 30 words a minute.   Adult learners built confidence and hope.  Students saw the value of what they had learned and earned points toward graduation requirements.
